Fiberglass Resins
Bondo® Fiberglass Resins & Repair Kits are 100% waterproof. Because they do not shrink, they are excellent sealers. Bondo® Fiberglass Resin is sandable in less than 2 hours, is compatible with all paints, and creates a strong and long lasting bond.
Instructions
What you will need:
Paint Brush, rubber gloves, measuring cup or tablespoon, mixing stick, sanding block
and sandpaper (80 & 180 grit), scissors, acetone or laquer thinner and fiberglass cloth or
mat.
- Clean repair area with acetone or warm, soapy water; let dry completely.
Sand with 80 grit sandpaper to remove all primer, paint or other debris.
- Put on gloves. Pre-cut fiberglass cloth or mat to extend 2-3 inches beyond repair area.
- Mix the liquid hardener:
Estimate the amount or resin needed to completely saturate the fiberglass cloth or mat. Pour resin into
clean container or measuring cup. For every 30mL of resin, use 12 drops of hardener. Or, for 6 tablespoons
of resin, use 1/4 teaspoon of hardener.
Mix thouroughly.
- Brush a coat of the resin/hardener mixture onto the damaged area, extending 2-3 inches beyond.
- Place fiberglass cloth or mat onto clean non-porous surface such as sheet of aluminum foil. Use paint
brush to apply resin/hardener mixture to fiberglass cloth/mat.
A dabbing motion will help saturate the material.
Place saturated fiberglass material over damaged area, flattening and smoothing with a plastic spreader
or squeegee. Brush another coat of resin/hardener mixture over the fiberglass material.
Similarily, place subsequent pieces of fiberglass material over the damaged area, following the same
procedure. May require more than 2 pieces of fiberglass depending on the size of the repair and the
desired strength. Allow material to harden 1-1/2 to 2 hours at 23.89 degrees Celcius (75F) or above.
Curing will take longer at cooler temperatures.
- Sand with 80 grit sandpaper, featheredge with 180 grit sandpaper to the edges, then paint.
- Clean up tools with acetone or laquer thinner.
Tips
- Working life of the resin/hardener mixture is approximately 12 minutes. Mix in small amounts, or only the amount
that is required for the repair.
- Resin can be used only as a sealer when being used without fiberglass cloth or mat (very thin application)
- Do not put mixed/unused material back into the container as it will harden the entire contents.
- Bondo® Bondo-Glass Filler contains short interlocking fiberglass strands, and eliminates the need
for fiberglass cloth. Recommended for small repairs (dime size or smaller)
- Bondo® Bondo-Hair Filler is formulated with long strands of chopped fiberglass, eliminating the need for fiberglass cloth.
Recommended for repairs up to 1" in size.
- Fiberglass Resin Jelly is a no drip jelly that is great for vertical surface repairs
